The ‘scapes series (2020-date)
The current line of enquiry within my work is focused on an experimental iteration of a single form. This form is a modular, pseudo-architectural structure located within minimalist, abstracted landscapes. The works are visually reminiscent of “landscapes” but this may be too narrow a definition for what the images are and how they function. Since embarking on this iterative series over two years ago, I simply nicknamed them‘scapes. The works are desolate and barren with nothing to relieve the endlessly receding horizon line save for ever-changing structure motif that never shifts from the centre of the composition. Each ‘scape has an individualised structure motif. By altering the amount of “slats” or “partitions” inside the structure, as well as shifting the vanishing point and direction and angle of illumination, every structure motif is unique and makes it impossible to repeat the same structure twice. These motifs embody both the Western and Eastern concepts of eternity. As described by Korean Minimalist painter, sculptor, and academic Lee Ufan, the idea of eternity in the West is personified by the “monument”, whereas in the East it resides within the notion of “change”.
This series of paintings constitutes the physical body of work that accompanied my master’s thesis Enantiodromia which I completed at Massey University, Wellington, between 2020-2021. I graduated with a master of fine arts first class honours in 2022.
