Bunkers-Inspo
2022, Pencil on brown paper, 28 x 18cm
These designs are an extension of the ‘scapes series I began during my masters of fine art at Massey University, Wellington, 2020-2021. The structure motif in the ‘scapes paintings is vaguely reminiscent of a minimalist monument such as Donald Judd’s “cubes” located at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas. The repeated motif in these works, however, were more inspired by my visits to the empty utilitarian structures at the various WWII gun placements and underground bunker networks located around the Wellington region. Therefore, these motifs are more bunker-like than the structures in the ‘scapes series. Unlike the ‘scapes paintings these designs utilise repitition within the same image, rather than an iterative process of painting a new structure motif in multiple works that are subtly different from one another. As drawings - pencil on brown paper - these works also lean more toward a brutalist architecture sensibility.
This is an ongoing series of drawings and paintings that will be updated as they are made.
